COMMISSIONING OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS image

FIRE EXTINGUISHER COMMISSIONING

We’ll ensure your extinguishers adhere to BS 5306 positioning guidelines:

  • Extinguishers must be visible and readily accessible at all times.

  • Large, heavy extinguishers should hang securely on wall brackets, with the carrying handle about 1 meter from the floor.

  • Smaller extinguishers (up to 4kg) should have their carrying handle mounted at 1.5 meters from the floor.

  • If wall mounting is impractical, use suitable floor stands or consider recessed housing, cabinets, or covers, especially in schools and similar locations.

  • Maintain a maximum travel distance of 30 meters for Class A risks and 10 meters for Class B and Class F risks from the fire to reach an extinguisher.

  • Standardise operation methods, shapes, appearances, and colors for extinguishers within a building or occupancy, and indicate their location with signs.

  • Whenever possible, group portable extinguishers to create fire points with multiple exit options, extinguishers, and a means to raise the alarm.

FIRE RISK ASSESSMENTS

Businesses must comply with fire safety law, specifically the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, also known as the Fire Safety Order. This law applies to England and Wales, effective from October 1, 2006.

Key points include:

Conduct a detailed fire risk assessment to identify risks and hazards in your commercial premises.

The responsible person for the premises must ensure a Fire Risk Assessment is completed by a competent person.

Record the Fire Risk Assessment if you have five or more employees or operate under a relevant license.

The responsible person must consider those at higher risk, reduce fire risks reasonably, and provide fire precautions.

Special precautions are needed for flammable/explosive materials.

Develop an emergency plan and document findings as necessary.

Maintain general fire precautions and facilities for firefighters.

Continuously review risk assessment findings.

If you lack the expertise or time, we can assist in arranging the fire risk assessment for you.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING image

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING

We provide Training in the use of Portable Fire Extinguishers so you can feel assured that your nominated staff are trained and confident to use them in the event of a fire (if safe to do so).

In the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (fire safety legislation) it states that the premises must be equipped with appropriate fire-fighting equipment where appropriate. With this, the person appointed responsible for fire safety must ensure that peoples training and equipment available to them are adequate.

In BS 5306-8 (Clause 4.5) it states the competent person should bring to the attention of the responsible person the legal requirement for training. Every opportunity should be taken to instruct personnel in the use of extinguishers, and to demonstrate their performance.

Extinguishers for different fire classifications will have different training requirements.
